Just a comment on these links to the Dawson book. These links require a subscription to the publisher’s service in order to read the material, if you are wanting a deeper look into participant observation.

Here’s an ISSUU link to the Chapter 13 in Catherine Dawson’s book on Participant Observation:

There is also a very short summary in chapter 3:

Currently I am writing a language acquisition course for an agency. I would like to write a lesson on language and culture learning as part of the course. And, I would like to include an assignment in that lesson, that would require my learners to go to your lesson LL1 and carry out the activities there.
How is your site set up? Is it for free and open access? Do I need to request formal permission? Assuming that I could get permission to use the site as a resource for my course, what is my next step in the permission process?

Katie,
Yes this site and the culture learning resources are still active, and are open for you and any like-minded colleagues to use. It is currently maintained by me, Roger Luce. I am located in Africa, on loan to another agency, and will return to the US in December, where I will continue to serve in the Learning and Development team with Ralph Elks. Thanks for exploring this site. We look forward to receiving your thoughts, suggestions, and any additional resources you may know of.

Is this site still active? May we still use it? I would be interested in hearing who is maintaining this site and if it is still possible to sign up to be able to work through these lessons. Thank you for letting me know if it’s OK for me to tell our new missionaries about this site.

Thank you for your work!

I will pass it on. An additional topic would be helpful: how to find Language Helpers.

We are starting with a fresh group of students this morning. I know some of them have already seen this website but I’m hoping they will be motivated to do each of these explorations. Adding the Language Tools was brilliant–so helpful!! I appreciate so much all the work you all did to get this site up and running and how you keep adding to it.

The link to Catherine Dawson’s article is not working now. I had looked at it earlier and saw that the summary on this page is enough to not need the article.

I’m hoping we can get some dialogue going from the Japan side.

Georgia
